From Detroit to Doha, Citizens Are Building a More Green Economy

Citizens intrigued with the idea of creating a green economy, but unsure about how they can participate in this transformation, can look at two cities that offer stark contrasts. Detroit and Doha lie in what appear to be different worlds – Detroit in the American state of Michigan and Doha in the sovereign Arab country of Qatar. These cities have long had a connection, however. Doha’s economy is reliant on petroleum, some of which ends up as gasoline that fuels Detroit’s cars. Detroit, of course, has long suffered from the automobile industry’s boom and bust cycles, and Doha confronts a future that may include depleted oil reserves.

My recent stay in Detroit and current trip to Doha have opened my eyes to how citizens are taking matters into their own hands and building more sustainable economies. Whether they till soil in Detroit or harvest the abundant sun in Doha, residents in these cities are now harnessing local resources that have been abundant all along. And in doing so, they are tackling persistent poverty and unemployment in Detroit and building an economy in Doha that can sustain itself should the country’s oil and gas reserves ever be depleted. The end result is that citizens from all walks of life, not just politicians or those with the right connections, are involved.

Detroit’s citizens are demonstrating resilience while factories shutter and the local government struggles with scandal and deficits. Large swaths of abandoned neighborhoods provide economic opportunities in urban farming. The work of enterprises such as Hantz Farms and non-profit organizations, including The Greening of Detroit and Earthworks Urban Farm, provide residents skills training and help stabilize neighborhoods.

But Detroit’s reemergence is not solely based on agriculture: the city center’s Tech Town includes clean energy and environmental companies among its 200 tenants. Locals inspired to join the green economy can absorb new skills thanks to Tech Town’s full calendar of training programs and seminars. For these reasons, it should be no surprise that Detroit is tilting towards a cleaner economy: Michigan is rich in biodiversity, has ample fresh water, and is laden with forests and organic farms.

Eight time zones away, Doha’s only plentiful resources are oil and natural gas. The notion that the country with the world’s highest per capita rate of carbon emissions could become a sustainability laboratory is at first jarring. But with its hosting of global events such as this year’s COP 18 Summit and, of course, the 2022 World Cup, Qatar has emerged as a model for green building and clean energy. A new source of energy has its foundation in sunshine, which is plentiful in Qatar. While some of Qatar’s focus on solar energy is in the form of billion-dollar investments, schools and inspirational leaders also spark change by working with the young.

U.S. Cellular: We’ll take the iPhone when Apple gives us LTE

It’s a common misconception that Apple is picking winners and losers among the wireless operators by bestowing or withholding the iPhone, but U.S. Cellular and its parent company TDS prove otherwise. TDS CEO Ted Carlson told attendees of a UBS analyst conference Monday that U.S. Cellular is waiting for Apple to offer a more “cutting edge” iPhone before U.S. Cellular would be willing to take the risk of selling it, FierceWireless reported. By cutting edge, U.S. Cellular means LTE.

In November, U.S. Cellular revealed that Apple had offered it the CDMA variant of the iPhone, but it declined, saying it couldn’t make the economics work. That makes a lot of sense in this case: selling the iPhone requires enormous upfront subsidies from wireless operators, leading U.S. Cellular to question the model’s profitability. In addition, the smartphone takes a tremendous toll on operators’ data networks.

Other regional operators like C Spire have risen to the challenge, but C Spire doesn’t have what U.S. Cellular has: a big, dense, data-hungry market like Chicago. U.S. Cellular only has 20 MHz of PCS spectrum in Chicago, with which it serves a tightly packed population of more than 13 million. U.S. Cellular doesn’t have that many 1X voice and EV-DO data carriers to go around. The iPhone’s enormous data impact likely would force U.S. Cellular to shift more voice channels to EV-DO, which might upset the delicate balance between voice and data services it has in Chicago.

The smarter thing to do, from U.S. Cellular’s perspective, is wait until Apple births an LTE smartphone, presumably the iPhone 5. U.S. Cellular plans to launch its own LTE network within the month, starting in smaller markets across its regional footprint.

But if U.S. Cellular does plan to support the LTE iPhone, it won’t launch it in Chicago – at least not with its current spectrum holdings. The operator failed to pick up any 700 MHz spectrum at auction in its flagship market, though it picked up licenses in all of the surrounding regions. U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless have filed a petition with the FCC to swap some of the former’s PCS spectrum throughout the country for some of the latter’s 700 MHz spectrum in Illinois and Indiana. If Chicago is part of that deal – and Verizon is flush with Windy City frequencies – then U.S. Cellular can build a complete iPhone-worthy 4G network.

Google Chrome takes second place from Firefox

Google Chrome has over taken Mozilla Firefox to become the second most poplular web browser in the world, according to new statistics.

The upstart browser, available for only three years, now has a 25.7 per cent share of the global market, according to StatCounter, compared to Firefox’s 25.2 per cent.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer remains out in front with a share of 40.6 per cent, but it’s expected that Chrome will continue to close the gap.

“We can look forward to a fascinating battle between Microsoft and Google as the pace of growth of Chrome suggests that it will become a real rival to Internet Explorer globally,” said Aodhan Cullen, chief executive of StatCounter.

“Our stats measure actual browser usage, not downloads, so while Chrome has been highly effective in ensuring downloads our stats show that people are actually using it to access the web also.”

Chrome became the number two browser in Britain in August, although it has a larger gap to close on Internet Explorer than the global average. Some 42.8 per cent of Britons online currently use Microsoft’s browser, according to StatCounter, compared to 45 per cent in August.

In the United States Microsoft’s share is even greater, at 50.7 per cent, and Chrome, on 17.3 per cent, is yet to overtake Firefox on 20.1 per cent.

Google entered the browser wars relatively late, in December 2008, but Chrome quickly became a strong contender thanks in part to promotion on the Google search home page, as well as TV and billboard advertising. It claims the speed of its software as a major advantage over rivals.

All the browser developers are now focused on adding HTML5 compatibility to their browsers. The new web standard offers new ways to include video and interactive elements in pages and is expected to prompt major changes in how many websites operate.
